Abstract

Micro and nano electro-mechanical systems (MNEMS) used for actuation most commonly take advantage of electrostatic or electromagnetic drive schemes. Electrostatic systems typically are rather simple. On the other hand, electromagnetic actuators are more complex, but excel when larger forces and displacements are required. This presentation provides an overview over recent electromagnetic micro and nano actuator developments and the applied technologies. Applications include biomedical manipulation, relays, active flow control in aeronautics, and micro and nano actuation in computer peripherals.
