Abstract:

Molecules exhibit chemical and physical properties, characteristic of their molecular shapes.  This seminar concerns with magnetism of multi-nuclear complexes.  i) Molecules with high-spin ground state and uni-axial magnetic anisotropy behave as a single domain magnet, called a single molecule magnet (SMM).  We focus on the dynamics of spin flips by quantum tunneling process.  ii) Molecules with ring structures have magnetic properties characteristic of the ring size.  Magnetism of a hepta-nuclear vandyl ring, which has an S =1/2 spin ground state due to intra-ring-antiferromagnetic interactions, will be discussed.  iii) A bistable system can rest in two phases, which have a minimum free energy, and two phases can be switched by applying external stimuli.  Multinuclear metal complexes with multiple bistability will be presented.
