Nanotechnology

The term nanotechnology refers to the production and use of structures that are smaller than 100 nm in at least one dimension. That is smaller than a thousandth of the diameter of a human hair! At this scale, things start to function ‘differently’; surface effects of materials and quantum mechanical effects are crucial.

Nanotechnology is a highly interdisciplinary science involving chemistry, physics, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering. It is one of the key technologies of the 21st century. The extensive application potential of nanotechnology can only be exploited in a way that makes economic sense if the effects and new properties of nanomaterials and nanostructures discovered in basic research are implemented in industrial products.
