The DFG says that "Excellence Initiative" aims to both promote top-level research and improve the quality of German universities and research institutions, thereby making a significant contribution to strengthening science and research in Germany in the long term, improving its international competitiveness and raising the profile of the top performers in academia and research. In the second round of this prestigious competition the Leibniz Universität Hannover is called to propose full proposals for two clusters of excellence. These ar
"QUEST - Centre for Quantum Engineering and Space-Time Research"
(coordinator: Prof. Wolfgang Ertmer)
This cluster will concentrate on the advancement of quantum engineering and space-time research to gain a better understanding of the underlying physics and to improve or utilise resulting innovative methods for new applications in fundamental physics and applied fields like earth observation, navigation and geodesy. The activities will focus on Quantum Engineering, Quantum Sensors, Space-Time Physics, and Enabling Technologies. In this cluster the following LNQE work groups are involved: Jan Arlt (IQ), Boris Chichkov (LZH), Wolfgang Ertmer (IQ), Rolf Haug (IFKP), and Michael Oestreich (IFKP). The LNQE office supports the application.
"Progress in Production" (Coordinator: Prof. Berend Denkena)
In the spirit of the Hannover Centre for Production Technology the whole process chain beginning at component development up to quality control is covered and optimized. The successful experiences of existing Collaborative Research Centers there are proposed and the best results of the latest research are brought together. The connecting vision of this cluster of excellence is a high-performance process chain for high-performance components, which manufactures customized products and offers socially responsible jobs. From LNQE are involved: Bernd-Arno Behrens (IFUM), Ludger Overmeyer (ITA), Bernd Ponick (IAL), Raimund Rolfes (ISD) and Peter Wriggers (IBNM).
"rebirth - Regenerative Biology and Reconstructive Therapy" (Coordinator: Prof. Axel Haverich)
In this already approved cluster of excellence of the Hannover Medical School and the Leibniz Universität Hannover are the following LNQE work groups participating: Peter Behrens (ACI), Boris Chichkov (LZH), Wolfgang Ertmer (IQ) und Hans Heinrich Gatzen (IMT). In focus of this cluster are the organs blood, heard, lung and liver, whereupon the LNQE work groups cover the technological part of research like e. g. the reconstruction of biological functions of organs.
