The Institute of Photonics at Leibniz University Hannover was founded in autumn 2020. It pursues research and teaching in the growing interdisciplinary field of photonics. Prof. PhD Xiaoying Zhuang focuses on the application of machine learning and numerical mechanics to calculate and design novel nanostructures, metamaterials and photonic systems.
An important research project of hers is the EU-funded research project ERC COTOFLEXI. Flexoelectricity is the generation of electric polarisation under mechanical strain gradient or mechanical deformation due to the electric field gradient (reverse flexo). Basically, ERC COTOFLEXI aims to explore the flexoelectricity of nanomaterials and to promote applications of flexoelectric materials, such as body implants and small wireless sensors.
