In stochastic resonance, the combination of a weak signal with noise leads to its amplification and optimization. This phenomenon has been observed in several macroscopic systems, but has never been observed in systems dominated by quantum mechanics. The research team of Professor Haug from the Institute of Solid State Physics at Leibniz University Hannover and his cooperation partners from Augsburg and Munich has now succeeded in observing this experimentally for the first time. They demonstrate the tunnel-free controlled quantum stochastic resonance when charging and discharging individual electrons at a quantum dot.
The results have now been published in "Nature Physics". Nature Physics 15, 330-334 (2019) DOI: 10.1038/s41567-018-0412-5
