The Wissenschaftsrat rates scientific new building LNQE in Hannover/Germany as outstanding

Laboratory of Nano and Quantum Engineering (LNQE) gets funding.

From Wednesday 23th till Friday 25th July 2008 the Wissenschaftsrat held a meeting in Berlin/Germany. This committee gives recommendations for federal grants of new buildings in universities. The building project Laboratory of Nano and Quantum Engineering (LNQE) of the Leibniz Universität Hannover come a very good 5th place of in total 16 funded buildings. Six further building were not recommended for grants. With the approval of the grants the building project is funded with additional federal funds - presumably into the millions - .

"The very good positioning shows that the LNQE push forwards the top group of national nanotechnology centers. It is vital to strengthen and to further build up this position." Says Prof. Rolf Haug, speaker of the executive board of the LNQE. "With the new building we get excellent technological possibilities and we can hopefully close up in the future to similar centers, as they already exist for instance at the ETH Zurich or in Harvard".

The Laboratory of Nano and Quantum Engineering (LNQE) is an interdisciplinary research center on nanotechnology at the Leibniz Universität Hannover. It comprises 25 work groups from science and engineering. Goals are excellent basic research and applied engineering at the nanoscale, accompanied by corresponding interdisciplinary teaching. In winter semester 2008 starts the bachelor study course "nanotechnology" at the Leibniz University Hannover.

The scientific building has 430 sqm of chemical, measurement and laser laboratories. 410 sqm are a research clean room and 509 sqm are workrooms for 44 staff members. The costs are approx. 14 Mio Euros. In September 2007 the construction was already begun. The completion will be in summer 2009.
